3 key principles of teaching physics

We asked our resident physics expert, Mr Kenneth Chan how he always manages to get his students learning and loving physics!

This is what he had to say:

1. Ensure the concepts make common sense

Ensure students understand everything in the physics course to the point of common sense.

This can be done for practically the entire physics course, with only the possible exception of certain parts of quantum physics (which are not even understood by the physicists themselves).

Practically everything else should be brought to the level of a common-sense type of understanding. This level of intuitive understanding will help students to solve even intricate problems in physics.

2. Clear all misconceptions

Ensure that students view everything correctly without misconceptions (which are not at all uncommon).

Many students have a misunderstanding of certain concepts in physics without realising it. And they can carry this misunderstanding for years. Often, when this misunderstanding is corrected, their physics can improve dramatically.

3. Ensure correct and efficient thinking

Ensure students think in a correct and efficient way, while avoiding methods that hamper their thinking.

Also, in cases where this is appropriate, provide a step-by-step approach to solving certain kinds of physics problems.

This step-by-step approach is particularly applicable in mechanics, and the steps follow a logical basis which can be understood readily by students. It will lead to an efficient way to solve problems more quickly and readily.

Mr Kenneth Chan

Kenneth has more than 20 years of experience teaching A-Level and O-Level Physics.

He was formally a scientific editor for research journals in Physics and has published an original scientific paper on the Theory of Relativity.

He has a Bachelor of Science Degree (Physics) from the National University of Singapore and a Degree in Medicine from the University of Western Australia.

Kenneth's passion for his subject often inspires students to pursue it at higher levels. His ability lies in making abstract concepts instantly understandable and concrete.
