4 ways to motivate your child

Exam results season is here! How do we respond to our children?

Below is a helpful list that came about in my discussion with a parent.

1. Give praise where praise is due

Point out the good that they've done and where improvements have been made. Don’t just harp on mistakes.

A balanced response will more likely motivate, boost morale and elicit more cooperation from your child.

2. Review together

Review what they know and what they don't. Work on those areas which are weak.

This may be painful as facing and confronting what he doesn’t know can be daunting. But in the long run, it will be more useful as information and concepts and processes build on each other.

3. Work on building their understanding

Understanding concepts whatever the subject matter is key to tackling different types of questions. It’s not just about putting down the correct key words in the answer!

Although practice makes perfect, a lack of understanding of concepts will lead to more confusion and misconceptions especially when trying out practice papers.

4. Take a break

Our brains need time to process and digest information. Switching to less demanding but meaningful tasks that include play and exercise can help relax the mind and absorb what it has learnt.

Exams are just one of the many hurdles in our children's lives

Doing well at the PSLE is not a predictor of success in Secondary School. Based on my own experience, although they struggle more, late bloomers tend to do better in the longer term.

I believe that it is more important to develop these skills:

  • Flexible thinking

  • Reasoning and logic

  • An ability to read cues - whether social or from written context, so that inferences can be made to encourage the next course of action or decision

  • A sense of humour

And all these can be encouraged through mindful interactions and conversations with your child.

It is important to give our children a healthy view of failure and provide the emotional support when they need it. Only then will they develop true grit and resilience and this will take them through to live a more well-adjusted life.
